But their South Carolina strategy carries a one-two punch. Not making a real effort here allows her to discount an Obama win as uncontested, and hence less meaningful. But by leaving the state to her husband, who won two presidential contests here, she makes it impossible for Obama to relax or focus his energies elsewhere. This week in South Carolina Obama is essentially running against the former President, and he knows it. "I think the South Carolina voters will have to make an assessment in terms of how seriously she's taking the state," Obama told CBN's David Brody yesterday. "She said [in the debate] last night that Bill Clinton wasn't the one running for President, but this is the next primary and he's the one who's staying behind."

Though he swears he's "rusty," Bill Clinton was in full campaign form Tuesday. Hours behind schedule, he stopped to press the flesh with everyone in sight. "I love talking to people, doing all these town hall meetings," Clinton told reporters at Lizzard's Thicket, a breakfast joint in Columbia. He also took the opportunity to hit at his wife's opponent when he was asked: "Is Obama running against you, or Hillary Clinton, or both of you?"

"Oh, I don't know, I thought he was running against me for a while there in Nevada when he said that Republicans had most of the new ideas and you had to challenge the conventional wisdom of the '90s," Clinton said with a mellow smile, leaning back before the cameras. That comment prompted an angry conference call from the Obama campaign, which announced that it was forming a South Carolina Truth Squad to respond to all of the Clintons' accusations. One that particularly has upset Obama is Bill Clinton's innuendo in Nevada, which his wife mentioned during the debate and he himself repeated yesterday, that Obama somehow supports the Republican Party's platform. The flap grew out of this Obama remark last week: "I think it's fair to say the Republicans were the party of ideas for a pretty long chunk of time there over the last 10, 15 years, in the sense that they were challenging conventional wisdom."

Obama spent the day on the defensive, growing visibly frustrated at times with the Clintons. "My point was that Democrats have got to reach out to disaffected Independents and Republicans and form a working majority to move our agenda forward," Obama told supporters in Lexington yesterday. "Well this suddenly became a situation where I was claiming that the Republicans had all the good ideas since 1980, according to the Clintons."

Bill Clinton said he hoped the rhetoric will "mellow out," though he understands that "we're going to have a few arguments — this is a contact sport. Obama isn't the only one who has taken issue with the former President's suddenly vocal role on the trail. South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn, the No. 3 House Democrat, went so far as to call on Clinton "to chill a little bit."

"I can understand him wanting to defend his wife's honor and his own record, and that is to be expected. But you can't do that in a way that won't engender the kind of feelings that seem to be bubbling up as a result of this," Clyburn, who is not endorsing a candidate, told CNN. Many political observers have stressed that the former President's outsized presence threatens to overshadow his wife, and that his sometime angry, petulant exchanges with the media remind voters of what they didn't always like about the Clinton years.

Still, Hillary Clinton's triumph in Nevada, where Bill Clinton was particularly vocal, seemed to show that, in the final equation, her husband does more good than harm. [url][SIZE=1]WASHINGTON -- Miguel Tejada is under FBI scrutiny, officials said Thursday after opening a preliminary investigation into whether the former AL MVP lied when he told federal authorities he never took steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

The inquiry, in response to a congressional request, amounts to an initial look at facts surrounding the case.

It does not mean charges will be brought against the Houston Astros shortstop, who in 2002 won his MVP award while with Oakland.

"The Justice Department has referred the Miguel Tejada matter to the FBI, and a preliminary inquiry will be conducted," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said Thursday.

Investigators with the FBI's field office in Washington will handle the inquiry. It is unclear how long initial fact-finding will take.

"I don't have any comment," said Tejada's lawyer, Mark Tuohey, who said he was unaware of the FBI's involvement until contacted by The Associated Press.

At issue are comments Tejada gave to House committee investigators in August 2005 when he was with the Baltimore Orioles. He denied during the interview that he used illegal performance-enhancing drugs or knew of other players using or talking about steroids.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The exact cause of death couldn't be determined but there was no sign of "surgical or anesthetic misadventure" in the death of Donda West, Kanye West's mother, a coroner's report said Thursday.

West, 58, died Nov. 10 at a Los Angeles-area hospital, a day after she had breast reduction, a tummy tuck and liposuction.

The report noted that coronary artery disease, the liposuction and mammoplasty, and multiple postoperative factors could have played a role, but said the exact contribution of each factor couldn't be determined.

The investigation found "therapeutic levels of medication" but no unusually high levels.

"The final matter of death could not be determined," the coroner's office said in a statement.

Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office said the family was notified of the findings earlier Thursday. "They were appreciative of our efforts," he said.

Asked if West would still be alive if she hadn't undergone the surgery, Winter said: "She could, possibly. But she could have also died because of pre-existing cardiac issues."

The coroner's office had said early indications suggested West died from surgical complications.

West was found unresponsive at her home a day after her surgery. In emergency 911 tapes released earlier this month, two unidentified women told a dispatcher that West suffered a heart attack and unsuccessfully tried to revive her.

Dr. Jan Adams, who operated on West, has denied any wrongdoing. Adams has repeatedly suggested other causes of death including heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or accidental overdose of painkillers prescribed after the surgery.

The state medical board is investigating whether Adams' license should be revoked or suspended after two alcohol-related arrests in the past four years.

Five months before her death, West had approached plastic surgeon Dr. Andre Aboolian of Beverly Hills, who was concerned about a pre-existing condition that may cause a heart attack during surgery. Aboolian didn't operate on her.

West was the inspiration for the song "Hey Mama" on her rapper-son's 2005 album, "Late Registration."

She left academia in 2004 to manage her son's career. She was chief executive of West Brands LLC and chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation. In May, she published a memoir titled, "Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star."
